about

"Deaf Sharp" is the debut full-length from honeybrandy (Nathan McGlothlin & Joey Wright). The duo headed out to southern California to work with good buddy Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple, Invisible Astro Healing Rhythm Quartet). For the single-day session, Schlarb connected honeybrandy with a pair of phenomenal horn & reed players & even sat in on electric guitar for a portion of the time.

The ascent from radio static to full group engagement at the beginning of Side A ("Opportunity School") plays out like a retelling of early Godspeed You! Black Emperor. From there, organ & synth drones are paired with winding passages carved by lap steel, clarinet, sax, & trumpet. Additional layers meander near & far, with the result resembling a sonic tapestry more than a collection of songs. The album proper closes with a piece ("A Great Champion In Time Of Peril") that feels like a dream influenced by Sean Callery's score to "Homeland".

Described by Kris Tiner (trumpet) as "weightless, effortless, sensitive and transcendent music", this LP showcases a group of musicians working towards a sound that is greater than the sum of its parts.

"On paper, their concoction of electronic effects and slide guitar would seem to be an imperfect match, but once it’s actually put into play, it makes a whole lot of sense. The formlessness of the electronics and how they occasionally coalesce into moments of stunning imagery presents a remarkably similar interface to the slippery melodicism of slide guitar and how its fluid motion seems endless until it glides back upon its starting point and closes the circle of a melodic vision. In guest roles, Kris Tyner and Philip Greenlief add some nice textures with wind instruments, and Chris Schlarb, naturally, via electric guitar.
- bird is the worm

"honeybrandy creates in "Deaf Sharp" an environment of sound that is bucolic in nature, reminiscent of traveling in the country side by night train. The mixing of atonal trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone throughout with the occasional beautiful melodies of a penny whistle (of all things!) expressed a sentiment of noir, feeling darkly cinematic in nature."

about

honeybrandy Lynchburg, Virginia

Initially formed to play a local gallery opening, the duet showcases a beauty in subtle layer manipulation with lo-fi charm. Where early recordings rely on a tendency for improvisation over set structures, the more recent output utilizes more rhythmic foundation to balance feelings of isolation, distance, & fear with solace, presence, & hope. ... more
